Theres some moments in life where you question whether you are dreaming or not. This is one of them.
Delicately hidden high in the mountains, Neuschwanstein Castle looks like it is straight out of a story book.
It was ,after all, the inspiration for the sleeping beauty castle in Disneyland. You can find Neuschwanstein near Füssen Germany (about an hour outside of Munich). I would encourage you to rent a car for the ride, the drive through the Bavarian countryside is absolutely stunning.
The palace was built by King Ludwig II as a personal refuge. Due to Ludwig’s obsession with the architectural design, Neuchwanstein was never fully finished before his tragic death. The castle is more breathtaking from the outside, but it is still worth it to take the tour of the inside to see the secret cave room and his elaborate bedding (14 carvers worked more than four years on the bed canopy alone).
Tip: Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, as you will be walking up a steep hill to get there.
Across from the castle, there is a bridge spanning between two mountains that offers an extremely surreal view of Neuchwanstein. The sight of this castle nestled at the foot of the Alps is almost unexplainable.
Diagonal from Neuchwanstein, you will find the Hohenschwangau Castle. Hohenschwangau was the childhood residence of King Ludwig. It is pretty rare to find two castles so close together. Although Hohenschwangau is less impressive than Neuchwanstein., you can usually buy a ticket that includes both castles at a pretty reasonable price.
Neuchwanstein is definitely one of the most popular castles in Europe (and is on the top of my list of favorite castles I have visited along with these). Which castle would you recommend visiting?
Gorgeous pics!! I am so bummed I missed visiting this castle when I was in Munich. Such a shame. Living vicariously through your pics 🙂
Thanks Krista! I heard that it’s even more beautiful in the winter when the castle is topped with snow. I’m sure you’ll make it there sooner or later!
