If you’re looking for a Slovenia itinerary, you’ve come to the right place. Slovenia has a lot to offer, especially if you like scenic mountain towns, charming European cities, and ancient, cave dwelling castles. Here’s my complete itinerary for Slovenia (and I hope you love the country as much as I did)!
This Slovenia itinerary includes Ljubljana, Lake Bled, Triglav National Park, and Predjama Castle.
Day 1: Ljubljana
This Slovenia itinerary will start off by flying into Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital city. Although there isn’t a ton to do in Ljubljana, I recommend you spend at least a day here as the city is a pleasant place to start off your trip. That, and there’s also a castle and some INCREDIBLE food.
Start your morning off with a visit to the Ljubljana Castle. This will require walking through Old Town Ljubljana (where you can see the famous Triple Bridge) and up a large hill in the center of the city. From the Ljubljana castle, you can get a 360 view of the city. There is also a cafe inside the castle where you can get coffee to fuel the rest of your day.
After your visit to the castle, head back down to old town and walk along the canals or take a boat tour. I loved walking around the city and seeing all of the old homes, urban wineries, and restaurants lining the water. There’s also plenty of musical performances along the canal, from violinists to accordionists.
Speaking of urban wineries, stop in one of the stores on the street to taste some of the local wine. Slovenian wine isn’t exported to a lot of places, so this may be your only chance!
When it comes time for dinner, there are plenty of great options. I was impressed by the food in Ljubljana. I found great reviews for a restaurant called Compa. It’s a small restaurant with candle light and bricks lining the walls, and it specializes in meat. In particular, horse meat. Yes, I tried it. And yes, it’s good. I highly recommend this place. And sorry for eating horse.
If you have more time, here are a few more things to do in Ljubljana.
Day 2: Predjama Castle and Lake Bled/Triglav
On day 2 of our Slovenia itinerary, grab breakfast in Ljubljana and then head South to the Predjama Castle. I was surprised that I hadn’t heard of this castle previously, as it is pretty remarkable. It’s located inside of a cave, and as you will learn during the tour, it’s actually the largest castle located inside of a cave in the world. I know, how many castles are actually located inside caves right?
Anyway, what’s even cooler is you can actually tour the cave too. You can tour the castle anytime but for the cave tour you actually need a time slot, so look up the times of the cave tour ahead of time.
After viewing the castle, there’s a few restaurants in the area to get lunch. Then, head North to Triglav National Park/Lake Bled which are in driving distance from one another.
I stayed at an Airbnb in Triglav that was actually one of my favorite Airbnbs yet: If you want to stay in the same place, you can sign up for Airbnb and use my code for $40 off.
I’m so obsessed with this place. Even better yet, the hosts were two of the nicest people I’ve ever met. They were super welcoming and always offering me fruit from their garden and a welcome drink (some sort of cherry liquor). They also gave me plenty of hiking advice. I usually make a list of the coolest Airbnbs I stay at every year, and this place will definitely be on it.

Day 3: Triglav National Park
I woke up early to hike Triglav Mountain, the highest mountain in Slovenia. If you’re not up for the challenge, there’s also tons of other hiking trails around Triglav.
Triglav National Park has tons of scenic places, from mountain ridges to hidden waterfalls. Since I’m pretty into hiking, I thought it was incredible. However, I think even if I wasn’t an avid hiker, I would have enjoyed the park for the views alone.
Unfortunately, I got stuck in a rain/hail storm so wasn’t able to finish the Triglav Mountain hike. Hopefully you will have better luck!
At night I treated myself and stayed at a fantastic Airbnb overlooking Lake Bled. I’m telling you, location doesn’t get much better than this. It’s lake view, castle view, and church view (although I have to admit I’m not a fan of church bells in the morning). If you want to find this place on Airbnb, you can sign up and use my code for $40 off.
Day 4: Lake Bled
Day 4 made up for Day 3 in weather and it ended up being perfectly sunny for Lake Bled. I walked around the lake path to take in all of the sights. You can also rent a boat on the water and paddle to the church on the island in the middle. The only reason I didn’t do this was because my timing is terrible and there was of course a swimming competition going on that day.
I did however hike to this amazing look out. The name is Ojstrica. You can find the hike by walking around the Lake Bled walk or put this into your Google Maps: Ojstrica, 4260 Bled, Slovenia
After I was finished at Bled, I headed out again to see the Mojstrana falls in Triglav. This is a must-do. It was one of the prettiest areas I’ve ever seen, AND there were hardly any other people there. The amount of green found in this area is incredible (seeing that I’m used to seeing only yellow in Southern California).
Day 5: Back to Ljubljana
If you have time, you can visit Ljubljana’s “skyscraper” for a cocktail overlooking the city before heading out to your flight. Here’s some additional things to do in Ljubljana if you have more time.
