On our way to Southeast Asia, we had a 12 hour layover in Dubai (that we scheduled on purpose) so we could go dune bashing with the Dubai Desert Safari tour.
Truth be told, I was just as excited for the Dubai Desert Safari as I was for the rest of our 2 week trip in Southeast Asia.
We were picked up at a designated spot in Dubai by a white land cruiser and began our journey into the desert. The ride lasted around 45 minutes. We stopped once to grab some more fitting attire (note new belly dancing sarong and head scarf below).
The Experience
“We No Speak Americano” came on as we veered off into desert. A group of twenty SUVs rode up and down, whipping through the sand. Our car came dangerously close to edges and flew seamlessly over the giant dunes. You may want to be careful with the Dubai Desert Safari Tour if your prone to motion sickness.
After an exciting and bumpy ride filled with a mix of House music and Hindi songs, we arrived at our camp in the middle of the desert. Lit up huts surrounded decorative tables, rugs and pillows on the sand.
The first half of the night was spent boarding camels for a ride through the desert and getting free henna tattoos. We climbed an enormous dune to watch the sunset over the horizon and eventually made our way over to the hookah lounge.
Everyone took a seat on the ground for dinner, where we would watch belly dancers and a glowing whirling dervish take the stage. The food at the Dubai Desert Safari was served buffet style and included various local dishes.
Overall, we had an amazing time on the Desert Safari Tour. It’s a lot of fun if you’re up for an adventure and you can fit a lot of activities into a small amount of time (we were on a 12 hour layover).
We chose to book the evening tour with Desert Safari Dubai. It runs from 3-9pm and they can pick you up from any location in Dubai. We got picked up from the mall.
