Along the Montana-Wyoming border you’ll find a steep winding highway that will take you on a journey among the snow capped Rockys.
Beartooth Highway was named the most beautiful drive in America, where you can cruise among some of the most daring landscapes for free.
It is also one of the highest and most rugged areas in the continental United States, with peaks reaching over 12,000 feet in elevation. With a ride like this, we wont let you go in blindfolded..
TIPS:
- Make sure to visit between mid May and mid October, since the pass is only open during certain months due to the heavy snowfall. You can view the dates it’s open here.
- The mountains are definitely the climax of this trip, although they aren’t the only thing to see. Beartooth Highway is also a scenic route for several lakes and forms the northeast gateway to Yellowstone National Park.
- Drivers should plan on a driving time of at least two hours from Red Lodge to Cooke City so make sure to pack some snacks.
- Take your time and be careful. Even though it’s a highway, you are allowed to stop often to enjoy the striking views.
Beartooth Highway absolutely stunning from start to finish. The scenery is of course the highlight, but there is so much more to this drive than meets the eye. The air is so fresh, and the wildlife you’ll see on the ride is unforgettable. This is THE most spectacular entrance into Yellowstone.
Beartooth is now added to my list of the Best Highways to Cruise in the US.
What highways would you recommend checking out?
Marteen:
I got to visit the Beartooth Highway the day after Memorial Day in 2014. It had only been open 1 day. Breathtakingly amazing! It had been one of my bucket list trips for many years. Most certainly one of the best places in America to take a nice scenic drive.
Thanks for your post and go check mine out.
Cheers

Thanks for commenting Sumoflam! When I visited Beartooth, it was just on my way to visit Yellowstone and I had no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised 🙂
We’re fans of the PCH too!
And here I thought that cruising along PCH was the most beautiful drive in America. Would love to do Beartooth Highway!
